From Seed to Skin
The Gentle Strength of Moringa Oil

This week the focus is on another of nature’s most powerful, yet often overlooked oils - Moringa Carrier Oil. With roots stretching back thousands of years and benefits that rival some of the most luxurious oils on the market, Moringa is a great carrier oil to add to your skincare collection.

A Brief History

The Moringa tree (Moringa oleifera), often called the “Miracle Tree”, is native to the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India. Used for over 4,000 years in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine, nearly every part of the tree has a purpose - leaves, seeds, bark, and especially the oil rich seeds.

The Moringa tree produces long, slender seed pods that resemble drumsticks - especially in countries like India, where they’re commonly cooked in curries and soups. Because of this unique shape, the tree is often referred to as the Drumstick Tree, and the oil derived from its seeds is naturally called Drumstick Oil.

Moringa Oil is also known as Ben Oil, Oil of Ben or Behen Oil which comes from the high content of behenic acid, a rare, long chain saturated fatty acid found in the oil. The term "ben" was used as early as the ancient Egyptian and Roman eras, when the oil was prized for its stability, fragrance carrying ability, and use in skin care.  Ancient Egyptians prized Moringa oil for its skin protective properties and used it as an anti-aging treatment. Historical records even show its use in perfumery, cooking, and as a lamp oil.

Chemical Composition

Moringa oil is pressed from the seeds and is technically a carrier oil, making it perfect for blending with essential oils

Here’s what makes Moringa oil so special:

Oleic Acid
This monounsaturated omega 9 fatty acid provides deep moisturisation and easy absorption into the skin.

Behenic Acid
A rare fatty acid that offers a silky, non greasy feel. Excellent for smoothing skin and hair.

Vitamins A, C & E
Natural antioxidants that help protect and nourish skin cells.

Sterols & Flavonoids
Plant compounds with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

Thanks to this unique profile, Moringa oil is highly stable and resistant to rancidity, giving it a longer shelf life than many other oils.
