Why It Matters

As lovers of essential oils, it’s easy to be captivated by their beauty - the delicate petals, rich resins, and ancient trees that give us their scent. But behind every drop lies the story of a plant, an ecosystem, and the people who harvest it. That’s why sustainability has always been at the heart of what we do at Ahimsa Oils.

Many essential oils come from plants that grow slowly or are vulnerable to over harvesting. When global demand increases, these species can quickly become endangered, which is something we refuse to contribute to.

A perfect example is Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora). Once celebrated for its soft, rosy woody aroma and naturally high linalool content, Rosewood has been severely over harvested across Africa and Asia. Illegal logging to meet high demand has driven many of these regions’ Rosewood stocks to near depletion.

Today, all 300 species of Rosewood are under international trade restrictions, protected under CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). Many are listed in the most restrictive appendices, meaning trade is only permitted under strict regulation to prevent commercial extinction.

Because of this, we are committed to sourcing Rosewood only in full compliance with CITES regulations, and we fully support conservation efforts to protect these remarkable trees.
 

The good news? Nature always provides alternatives. Our chosen substitute when Rosewood is not available is  Ho Wood (Cinnamomum camphora) which shares a remarkably similar scent profile - soft, woody, and lightly floral, while offering the same calming benefits. Like Rosewood, it’s rich in linalool, a naturally soothing compound, but unlike Rosewood, Ho Wood is sustainably cultivated, using renewable bark and branches rather than endangered rainforest timber.

By making thoughtful substitutions like this, we can all enjoy the beauty of aromatherapy while honouring and protecting the plants that make it possible.
