Shipping Information

Who do you use to send my order?
We use Australia Post for all of our deliveries.

What are your shipping costs?
We offer flat rate shipping Australia wide:

  • $12 Parcel Post
  • $15 Express Post

Both options are tracked for peace of mind.

*If your order exceeds our largest satchel size (around 5kg) and requires a box, we’ll get in touch with you to confirm the additional postage cost. Unfortunately, these charges from Australia Post can be quite high (sometimes up to $40 depending on the area), so we’re unable to absorb them.*

What happens if my order hasn’t arrived yet?
Once your order has been dispatched, Australia Post will email you directly with your tracking number. You can click the link in that email or enter the number into the Australia Post website or app to see the latest updates. If your parcel seems delayed, the first step is to lodge an enquiry with Australia Post using your tracking details. Should Australia Post deem the parcel officially missing, we will be able to arrange a replacement order or a refund.

Please note:

  • If you select Authority to Leave and the parcel is marked as delivered but goes missing, this will void any insurance or compensation with Australia Post and Ahimsa Oils.
  • If a parcel shows as delivered but is later lost or stolen, this is outside of our control, and Ahimsa Oils cannot provide a refund or replacement. In these cases, the matter must be followed up directly with Australia Post.

What do I do if one of my bottles are broken when they arrive?
This happens very rarely as we take a lot of care with our packing to ensure your orders safety. Occasionally there may be a breakage. If this occurs, please take a picture of the broken bottle and let us know so we arrange for an insurance claim and replace your broken item.

Can I come and pick up my package?
Unfortunately, the answer is no to this request. We run Ahimsa from a warehouse built on our property, and to ensure our families privacy we don’t allow for pick ups.

What is The Difference Between Your Pure & Natural Essential Oils and Genuine Essential Oils Range?

At Ahimsa Oils, we offer two main ranges of essential oils: Pure & Natural and Genuine. Both are high quality and suitable for therapeutic use, but they serve slightly different purposes.

Pure & Natural Essential Oils

  • Sourced solely from specified botanical species and always from a defined geographical region.
  • Produced using the best available extraction methods with no reconstruction, rectification, folding, adjustment, or adulteration.
  • Where possible, oils are organically grown.
  • Backed by our long standing relationships with trusted suppliers, as well as our own sensory checks (colour, consistency, aroma) to confirm quality.
  • These oils represent the highest grade, ideal for professional aromatherapy, therapeutic use, and natural perfumery.

Genuine Essential Oils

  • Excellent quality essential oils that are equal to or better than most oils available in Australia.
  • Offered at exceptionally low prices thanks to our low overheads, trusted industry connections, and focus on quality over fancy packaging.
  • Best suited as a commercial range for more common essential oils.
  • No distinction is made for chemotype or regional variance, which can sometimes be important in advanced therapeutic work.
  • Still far superior to the majority of oils on the market, and highly suitable for everyday therapeutic applications.

Why both ranges?
Pure & Natural oils are chosen when exact species, origin, and verified purity are essential. Genuine oils provide an affordable yet high quality option for common oils, perfect for blending, formulating, and general therapeutic use. Both ranges are carefully sourced for aromatherapy, therapeutic use, and natural perfumery, never for the food or flavour industry, where oils are often altered. Soil, climate, altitude, harvest methods, distillation, and storage all influence the final quality of an essential oil, and we take great care to ensure both ranges reflect the integrity and beauty of the plants they come from.

What is an Absolute?

An absolute is a highly aromatic extract, similar to an essential oil, that is widely used in aromatherapy and perfumery. Like essential oils, absolutes are volatile and beautifully fragrant, but the method of extraction is different.

Absolutes are typically produced through solvent extraction. After extraction, the solvent is carefully removed, leaving behind a concentrated aromatic essence. Traditionally, a method called enfleurage was also used. This involved capturing plant fragrance in odourless fats (solid at room temperature), which would later be processed to obtain the absolute.

The result is a concrete, a thick, waxy substance containing the plant’s aromatic compounds, which is then refined into the final absolute.

Absolutes are most often used for delicate flowers and plants (such as jasmine, rose, and tuberose) that cannot withstand steam distillation. In these cases distillation would damage the fragrance profile, or the yield would be too low to make essential oil production viable. Because of this, absolutes are considered the truest capture of a plant’s delicate phytoessence, making them especially prized in fine perfumery and luxury aromatherapy.

May Oils be Used Directly on The Skin?

In general, only carrier oils (also known as skincare oils, usually cold pressed) should be applied directly to the skin. Carrier oils are gentle, nourishing, and designed to safely deliver the benefits of essential oils.

Essential oils, on the other hand, are highly concentrated and powerful. For topical use they should always be diluted to 1 - 3% in a carrier oil, following standard aromatherapy guidelines. We recommend Jojoba Oil as an excellent base for diluting and applying essential oils to the skin.

There are only two exceptions:

  • Lavender
  • Tea Tree

These essential oils may occasionally be applied neat (undiluted) in very small amounts, but dilution is still generally recommended for safe, long term use.

Thick Aromatic Oils - What To Do

Essential oils, absolutes, balsams, and resins all vary in thickness. On the viscosity scale, the lightest are usually the citrus oils, while the thickest and most resinous include oils such as Guaiacwood, along with many absolutes and balsams.

So, what should you do when you receive a thick, resinous, or semi solid oil from us and find that it won’t pour through the dripolator cap?

Using Your Oils
We provide bottles fitted with a special dripolator cap that has a larger orifice than usual. However, for some very thick oils, this may still not be enough to allow the oil to flow easily.
The industry standard solution is to gently warm the oil until it reaches a workable consistency:

  1. Prepare a hot water bath - fill a coffee mug or small bowl with hot (not boiling) water.
  2. Loosen the cap slightly and submerge the amber glass bottle up to about the 70% mark. This prevents water from entering the bottle.
  3. Monitor carefully - depending on the oil, it may take anywhere from warm (around 50°C) to hotter water (up to 90°C) to soften the oil.
  4. Remove once the oil flows and use as normal.

Because most of these oils are produced via steam distillation, which already involves high heat, this gentle warming process will not damage their aromatic or therapeutic qualities.

Extra Notes

  • It may take a little trial and error to learn how much heat and time each resinous oil needs.
  • Our waterproof labels are designed to withstand this process, so you’ll always know what’s inside your bottle.

With a little patience, your resinous aromatic treasures will be ready to use without issue!

Contraindications - Buyer Beware

Essential oils are powerful plant extracts and should always be used with care. The following contraindications relate specifically to direct application to the skin, which we generally do not recommend, with the exception of Tea Tree and Lavender, which may occasionally be used neat in small amounts.

Below are some common considerations, but this list is not exhaustive. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or are using oils on children or pets, please seek advice from a qualified practitioner.

Pregnancy
Avoid essential oils during the first trimester unless advised by a qualified aromatherapist. In later stages, certain oils may be used safely in low dilutions (1%) for massage. Always proceed with caution during this special time. (See our pregnancy FAQ for more details.)

Children
Essential oil use with children depends greatly on age and sensitivity.

  • Avoid Eucalyptus (high in 1,8-cineole) and Peppermint (high in menthol) until children are older.
  • Aniseed and Fennel oils are best avoided until school age due to their potential hormonal effects.

High Blood Pressure
While some sources list Hyssop, Black Pepper, Sage, and Clove as oils to avoid, leading expert Robert Tisserand notes that there is no scientific evidence supporting the idea that essential oils worsen hypertension when used safely.

Epilepsy
Use caution with: Fennel, Hyssop, Eucalyptus, Camphor, Sage, Clary Sage, and Peppermint.

Chronic Kidney Disease
Avoid essential oils such as Juniper Berry and Black Pepper, which may place additional strain on the kidneys.

Phototoxicity
Avoid applying certain citrus oils to the skin before sun exposure or tanning, as they can increase the risk of skin pigmentation or irritation:

  • Bergamot (unless bergaptene-free)
  • Grapefruit
  • Lime (unless distilled)
  • Lemon
  • Mandarin
  • Bitter Orange

Essential oils are highly concentrated and potent. Anyone with chronic health conditions, pregnant or breastfeeding women, parents of young children, and pet owners should use essential oils with extra care and informed judgment.

Ahimsa Oils makes no medical or therapeutic claims. We encourage you to enjoy learning about the benefits of essential oils, and most importantly, to use them safely and respectfully.

Why Should Certain Oils be Avoided During Pregnancy?

During pregnancy, it’s important to approach essential oil use with extra care. Some essential oils may stimulate hormonal activity, encourage uterine contractions, or potentially increase the risk of bleeding, especially during the first trimester when the body is most sensitive.

For this reason, we strongly recommend consulting a qualified healthcare provider or clinical aromatherapist before using any essential oils during pregnancy.

Some essential oils to avoid throughout pregnancy include:

  • Ajowan
  • Basil
  • Camphor
  • Cedarwood
  • Chamomile
  • Clary Sage
  • Cypress
  • Fennel
  • Hyssop
  • Juniper
  • Marjoram
  • Rose Geranium
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme

In the second and third trimesters, certain oils may be used safely and effectively at a low dilution (1%) in a carrier oil for gentle massage, but only under professional guidance.

Your safety and wellbeing are our top priority. When in doubt, always seek expert advice.

What Does Phototoxic Mean?

Phototoxicity refers to a skin reaction that can occur when certain essential oils are applied to the skin before sun exposure. This reaction can lead to increased pigmentation, redness, or irritation when the skin is exposed to UV light, especially in direct sunlight or tanning beds.

Many citrus essential oils are naturally phototoxic, including:

  • Bergamot (unless it's bergaptene-free)
  • Lemon
  • Grapefruit
  • Bitter Orange
  • Mandarin

If using any of these oils topically, it’s best to avoid sun exposure for several hours afterward. Additionally, they should not be used at all while taking photosensitising medications, as this may increase the risk of adverse skin reactions.

For safe sun care, consider using non phototoxic essential oils or apply citrus oils in the evening when sun exposure is minimal.

How Is It That You Sometimes Carry More Than One Variety of an Oil?

Some essential oils like Lavender, exist in many different varieties around the world. In fact, there are over 30 distinct types of lavender alone, each with its own unique aroma, chemical profile, and therapeutic value.

That’s why we sometimes offer multiple varieties of the same oil. For example, we currently carry several exceptional types of Lavender Essential Oil, including:

  • Certified Organic Lavender
  • High Alpine Lavender
  • Lavender Provence
  • Lavender Spike
  • Lavender French

This variety ensures that Aromatherapists, formulators, and retailers can choose the exact type that suits their needs, whether for therapeutic precision, product development, or affordability.

Each oil is carefully selected for quality, and offering these options allows us to cater to both professional and everyday users alike.

Can Your Oils Be Ingested?

While our Essential Oils and Carrier Oils are 100% pure and natural, we do not recommend ingestion of essential oils.

Essential oils are highly concentrated substances. Without the proper medical training and dosage expertise, ingesting them can cause serious harm. This position is supported by the International Federation of Aromatherapists, which advises that essential oils should only be taken internally under the guidance of a qualified medical doctor who is also trained in clinical aromatherapy, as practised in countries like France.

It’s important to understand that purity is not the issue, even the highest quality oils can cause damage if used incorrectly. Some essential oils may irritate or damage mucous membranes when ingested. Even topical use can result in adverse reactions if oils are not properly diluted.

As the physician Paracelsus said, “The dose makes the poison.”

We’ve had individuals choose not to purchase from us because we don’t promote ingestion, and we fully respect their decision. However, our position is grounded in care, ethics, and legal responsibility. The Atlantic Institute of Aromatherapy has tracked essential oil injury reports since 2014, and many incidents, both internal and topical, have stemmed from incorrect use, not poor quality.

Our goal is to ensure our customers experience the benefits of essential oils safely and respectfully. Thank you for understanding our commitment to your wellbeing.

What Are The Different Ways to Use Essential Oils?

Essential oils can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, each offering its own unique benefits. Here are the most common methods:

Massage
Blending essential oils with a carrier oil for massage combines the therapeutic effects of both scent and touch. It’s an excellent method for relaxation, muscle tension, circulation, and emotional balance.

Inhalation
One of the fastest ways to experience the benefits of essential oils. You can inhale directly from the palms of your hands, place a few drops on a tissue, or use steam inhalation for respiratory support.
Note: Inhalation is not recommended for individuals with asthma or epilepsy.

Baths
Adding a few drops of essential oil to a warm bath creates a calming, aromatic soak that benefits both body and mind.

Diffusion
Using an essential oil diffuser gently disperses the aroma into the air. Ideal for creating a soothing environment, cleansing the atmosphere, or supporting mood and wellbeing.

Compress
A compress allows you to apply essential oils to a specific area of the body. Simply add a few drops to warm or cold water, soak a cloth in the solution, and apply to the desired area for targeted relief.

How Should I Store My Oils?

To maintain the integrity and shelf life of your essential oils, we recommend the following storage guidelines:

  • Keep oils in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity.
  • Avoid refrigeration unless specifically advised. Storing oils in the fridge can cause some components to solidify or separate, this is especially true for oils like Citrus Bergamia (Bergamot), which may become unbalanced if partially precipitated.
  • Some oils, such as Pimpinella Anisum (Aniseed), naturally freeze at relatively high temperatures. If this happens, simply allow the oil to return to room temperature and gently warm it if needed. Once fully liquified, give it a good shake before use.

Proper storage helps preserve both the aromatic and therapeutic qualities of your oils.

What Are The Different Methods of Extraction?

Essential oils are extracted using a variety of methods, depending on the plant material and the delicacy of its aromatic compounds. Here are the main techniques used:

Steam Distillation
This is the most common method for extracting essential oils. Steam passes through the plant material to isolate the volatile aromatic compounds, which are then cooled and separated into oil and hydrosol. It requires skill to moderate temperature and timing for optimal quality.

Cold Pressing (Expression)
Used primarily for citrus fruits like orange, lemon, and bergamot, this method mechanically presses the rind to release the essential oils. Cold pressed oils are highly volatile and can evaporate quickly when exposed to air.

Solvent Extraction
Ideal for delicate flowers that can’t withstand heat or pressure (like jasmine or rose), this method uses a solvent to draw out aromatic compounds. The solvent is then removed, leaving behind a concentrated and fragrant substance known as an absolute. (See: What is an Absolute?)

CO2 Extraction
Carbon dioxide is pressurised into a liquid and used as a solvent to extract the oil. Once the pressure is released, the CO2 returns to gas, leaving behind a pure and potent extract. This method preserves more aromatic compounds than any other, producing oils of exceptional quality, such as our Ginger CO2 Extract.

How is Your Pricing Calculated?

All of our essential oils in bottles 5ml and above are sold by volume. However, due to the rarity and value of some oils, we also offer a selection of our more precious oils by weight (per gram).

To ensure accuracy, we use precision scales certified under the Trade Measurement Act, the same standard used for weighing gold and diamonds. This allows us to price oils by the exact gram, so you can purchase only what you need, rather than committing to a standard bottle size.

This approach not only makes rare oils more affordable, but also helps minimise waste of these highly concentrated natural resources.

Please note:

  • 1 gram is approximately equal to 1ml, but this can vary slightly depending on the oil’s specific gravity.
  • For ease of display, our prices show smaller sizes, but larger quantities are always available, just contact us for a custom quote .??

Are Dropper Inserts (dripolators) Supplied?

1 gram - 100ml orders for essential oils placed in glass bottles are supplied with a drop dispenser fitted.
