Aromatic Harmony - Geranium Essential Oils
Welcome to our newsletter dedicated to the diverse world of geranium essential oils! We will investigate three distinct varieties: Geranium Bourbon, Geranium Egypt, and Rose Geranium. Each type offers unique qualities and benefits, as well as different scent profiles. Let us look at a brief history of this very popular essential oil!
Where did it all start?
Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) is believed to have been used by the ancient Egyptians who valued its aromatic properties and often used it in perfumes. Likewise, Ancient Greece and Rome also recognised the therapeutic benefits of geranium. It was used in various medicinal preparations for its astringent and wound-healing properties.
Pelargoniums are native to South Africa, but were brought to Europe in the 17th century most likely by explorers and traders and the first cultivation for distillation of the essential oil was in France. The plant was subsequently re-exported to the French colonies in Africa and elsewhere then more widely.
In the 19th Century geranium essential oil gained prominence as distillation techniques improved. It became a staple in European herbal medicine and was used to treat a variety of ailments, including respiratory issues, skin conditions, and menstrual disorders.
Three of the most well know geraniums are the Bourbon, Egyptian and Rose. The exact composition of geranium oil can vary significantly depending on factors such as the species of Pelargonium used, the part of the plant distilled (leaves, stems, flowers), and the extraction method. For example, Geranium Bourbon (from Reunion Island) may have a slightly different composition compared to Geranium Egypt or Rose Geranium.
Geranium Bourbon
Origin: Reunion Island (formerly Bourbon Island), now grown in various regions including Madagascar.
Aroma: Rich, floral scent with a hint of citrus.
Properties: Known for its balancing effects on both mind and body, Geranium Bourbon is often used to promote emotional stability and alleviate stress. It is also valued for its skincare properties, aiding in the treatment of inflammation, and promoting healthy, radiant skin.
Geranium Egypt
Origin: Mainly cultivated in Egypt.
Aroma: Similar to Geranium Bourbon but generally the bourbon will have
a sweeter and more complex scent.
Properties: Geranium Egypt shares many therapeutic properties with Geranium Bourbon, including its ability to balance emotions and promote skin health. Also used in aromatherapy for its calming effects and in skincare to regulate oil production and improve circulation.
Rose Geranium
Origin: Native to South Africa and now grown worldwide.
Aroma: Intensely floral, with rose notes and a hint of citrus.
Properties: As the name suggests, Rose Geranium offers a more pronounced floral fragrance compared to other geranium varieties. It is highly regarded for its balancing effect on hormones and its ability to uplift mood. In skincare, it is used for its ability to hydrate, rejuvenate, and help promote cell regeneration, making it ideal for mature or dry skin types.
Another interesting note
Two of the dominant components in Geranium Oil are Citronellol and Geraniol. Geraniol contributes to the floral scent as well as having antibacterial, anti-fungal and antioxidant properties. Citronellol is known for its anti-microbial properties but also for its ability for use as a natural insect repellent in particular for mosquitoes. As always dilute Geranium before use topically and try on a small patch of skin first to ensure that there is no irritation.
Whether you prefer the classic floral notes of Rose Geranium or the slightly citrusy undertones of Geranium Bourbon and Geranium Egypt, incorporating geranium essential oils into your daily routine can bring a host of benefits to both body and mind.
