Clove Essential Oil
The Natural Powerhouse for Mould Removal

With heavy rainfall causing flooding in Far North Queensland, Clove Oil is currently in high demand so I thought it might be useful to revisit how Clove Oil can assist with mould remediation and other uses for this versatile essential oil. Excessive rain and humidity can create the perfect environment for mould growth and clove oil has a remarkable ability to combat mould naturally.

Why Clove Essential Oil is Your Best Choice for Mould Removal

As we all know, mould can be persistent and harmful, contributing to health issues such as respiratory problems and allergies. While traditional mould removal methods often rely on harsh chemicals such as bleach, this tends to mask the problem without eliminating the spores whilst Clove Essential Oil takes a different approach. Its powerful antimicrobial properties make it an effective natural solution for both preventing mould growth and eliminating existing spores, providing long-lasting protection.

The key to Clove Essential Oil’s potency is eugenol, a compound with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal and antiseptic properties that target mould at its source, rather than simply covering up the issue. It targets the fungus cell walls to disrupt it’s growth and cause mould spores to die and stop it from spreading.

How to Use Clove Oil for Mould Removal

  1. Mix Clove Oil with Water: To create a simple mould fighting spray, mix about 24 drops (a quarter teaspoon) of pure Clove Essential Oil with 1 litre of water. For the best results, don’t make the solution too strong, as this may damage surfaces. Always test on a hidden area first. You can use either 100% Pure and Natural Clove Bud Oil or Clove Soluble Oil (which disperses easily in water) for this purpose. If you choose Clove Soluble Oil, double the amount used to 48 drops per litre of water.

  2. Mix Clove Oil with Vinegar: Vinegar is another natural cleaning powerhouse that complements Clove Oil’s antimicrobial properties. Create an effective mould removal spray with:

  • ⅓ cup white vinegar
  • ⅓ cup distilled water
  • 3 drops Tea Tree Oil
  • 11 drops Clove Essential Oil Shake the ingredients together and spray onto the affected surfaces. Let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe clean. This blend offers a powerful disinfecting solution with the added benefit of Clove and Tea Tree oils' combined antimicrobial action.
  1. Mix Clove Oil with Washing Detergent: Clove Oil can also be used on fabrics or clothing that have developed mould. Add a few drops to your regular washing detergent to help remove the mould while leaving a fresh, pleasant scent behind.

  2. Use Clove Oil in the Washing Machine: If mould is suspected in your washing machine, add about 10 drops of Clove Oil to the drum and run a hot cycle (60°C or higher) to kill any mould or spores lingering inside.

  3. Consider Other Areas Where Mould May Be Hiding: Mould doesn’t just grow in obvious spots. Be sure to inspect places like bathroom tiles, grout lines, window sills, and under sinks, where mould tends to thrive. Regular maintenance and inspection can help prevent significant mould growth.

Additional Benefits and Uses of Clove Essential Oil

Beyond its mould remediation properties, Clove Essential Oil has several other benefits:

  • It may help ease respiratory infections due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, offering relief from symptoms.

  • It’s also useful in treating cuts, wounds, and fungal infections like athlete’s foot, as it can accelerate healing with its antiseptic qualities.

Important Reminder

Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil before applying topically, never apply them directly to the skin.
