Ever Wonder Why
Some Oils Are Solid?

If you’ve ever received certain bottles of our essential oils or absolutes, only to find… nothing coming out, no drips, no movement, just completely or almost solid, don’t worry, this is normal and there is something in your bottle!

And although we have it noted on those particular essential oil and absolute pages on our website, it can still be a little confusing when they arrive like that. But the truth is, it’s actually a good sign. It proves they’re the real deal, 100% pure and natural, unadulterated, just as nature made them.

Some essential oils are naturally thick, sticky, or even completely solid at room temperature. These thicker oils usually come from resins, roots, or woods, and are often used in natural perfumery for their rich, grounding scent profiles, like Galbanum, Guaicwood, and Oakmoss to name a few.

Some oils like Eucalyptus Strawberry Gum, actually come to us as crystals, which we melt and pour into the bottle fresh each time it’s ordered. Once warmed, it melts into a thin, pourable oil and mostly stays liquid unless it’s exposed to very cool temperatures, like in winter.

Others, like Guaicwood, do tend to resolidify again after they cool, so they’ll need that little warming up every time.

I want to leave you with a fun fact this week. While not a thick oil, 100% pure and natural Rose Otto will crystallise in the fridge. If it doesn’t, it’s a strong sign it isn’t actually pure rose. Take it out and let it sit at room temperature, and it’ll return to its liquid form. How interesting is that!

So if you ever find yourself holding a bottle wondering why it’s not dripping, don’t worry. These oils just need a little warmth and patience. And once they open up, they’re some of the most powerful, complex oils to work with.
