Floral, Citrus, Woody, Resinous
Your Guide to Scent Families

Have you ever noticed that on a bright summer morning, you reach for something crisp and citrusy, but on a cool winter evening, you're instinctively drawn toward something warmer and woodier? There's a logic to this, and once you understand scent families, the way you choose and use your oils can start to change.

Scent families are how perfumers, and increasingly, aromatherapists, group essential oils by their dominant aromatic character. Knowing which family an oil belongs to tells you something immediate: how it's likely to make you feel, what season it suits, and which other oils it will harmonise with. Think of it as a shorthand for the language your nose already speaks.

The four families worth knowing first are floral, citrus, woody, and resinous. Here's how to read each one.

FLORAL

SOFT · ROMANTIC · BALANCING
Rose, lavender, ylang ylang, neroli, jasmine, geranium

Floral oils are extracted from petals and blossoms and carry the most recognisably "perfumed" quality of all the families. They tend to sit in the middle of the emotional spectrum - neither sharply stimulating nor deeply sedating, which is why they are so reliably useful for mood balancing and general wellbeing.

Mood: Calming · Uplifting · Balancing
