Natural Defenders Against Seasonal Challenges

For my family, as the days have grown shorter and cooler and ushering in the flu and cold season, the need for natural immune support becomes paramount. At Ahimsa, we draw inspiration from history's tales of resilience and protection and I have always found the story of “Thieves Oil” fascinating.

The Legend of Thieves Oil

The story of the Four Thieves during the Black Plague is a legendary tale that has been passed down through centuries, often associated with the devastating outbreaks of the bubonic plague in Europe during the Middle Ages, particularly in the 14th century. During this time, the plague, also known as the Black Death or Bubonic Plague, ravaged communities, causing widespread death and fear. It was highly contagious and deadly, with mortality rates reaching up to 60% or more in some areas. Amidst this chaos, a notable story emerged from France, where a group of thieves seemingly managed to escape the plague's deadly grasp.

According to legend, these thieves were actually spice merchants and perfumers who made their living by trading exotic spices, herbs, and oils. Despite the risks, they ventured into plague-ridden areas to plunder the possessions of the dead and dying. Remarkably, they never contracted the plague themselves. When they were eventually apprehended authorities sought to understand how they had managed to avoid falling ill. The thieves claimed that they had concocted a special aromatic blend of botanicals that they applied to their bodies, specifically to their hands, feet, and temples before entering infected homes. This blend not only protected them from the foul odours thought to carry the disease but also purportedly boosted their immunity against the plague itself. The exact recipe of the blend has varied over time and has been attributed to different combinations of herbs and spices. There have always been common ingredients though which are often mentioned and include aromatic herbs and spices such as Clove, Cinnamon, Lemon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary. These herbs are known for their antimicrobial properties and were likely chosen for their ability to purify the air and support overall health.

Introducing Sentinel Blend

At Ahimsa, we've crafted our own “thieves blend” based on the historical oils used. Sentinel Blend combines the power of Clove, Cinnamon, Lemon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary to support immune health and respiratory wellness. It’s warm, spicy aroma not only cleanses the air but also uplifts the spirit during the colder months. Please note that as this blend is quite high in clove it may not be suitable for diffusing around pets. Due to their keen sense of smell, strong oils like Clove, Cinnamon and Eucalyptus are not recommended to be diffused around pets, especially in small spaces.

Presenting Kids Crusader Blend

While Sentinel Blend is ideal for adults seeking robust immune support, we understand the importance of safety, especially for young children. This is why we developed our Crusader Kids Protection Blend. Formulated with 100% Pure and Natural essential oils, Lavender, Lemon, Pine, Rosalina, Siberian Fir Needle, and Marjoram, Crusader is gentle yet effective for diffusing in children's spaces. These oils not only help protect against airborne threats but also offer a soothing, relaxing aroma thanks to Lavender and Marjoram. This blend is tailored for children but is also a beautiful blend to diffuse for the family.

A Modern Approach to Time Honoured Wisdom

Whether you're seeking an alternative to traditional disinfectants or aiming to enhance your wellness routine, Sentinel Protection offers versatility. It can be used in diffusers to purify the air or even added to homemade cleaning solutions for an aromatic boost.
