The Power
of Synergy

In aromatherapy, it’s often assumed that a single essential oil, chosen for its specific properties, can address a particular concern on its own. And often times, it can. Blends on the other hand are combinations of two or more essential oils, that are crafted with intention. In many cases, thoughtfully formulated blends don’t simply combine aromas, they actually create something more balanced and often more effective than any one oil alone. This is the principle of synergy.

Building a Natural
First Aid Kit

A natural first aid kit isn’t about replacing modern medicine. It’s about having reliable support on hand for minor burns, headaches, cuts, bruises, bites, and emotional shocks that happen in real life. When chosen and used properly, essential oils can play a thoughtful supporting role here. Not as quick fixes, but as tools that work alongside the body’s own ability to respond and recover.

Aromatic Waters
in Skincare

Aromatic waters are often treated as a single category, gentle alternatives, lighter options, or diluted versions of something else. In reality, hydrosols and flower waters are two very different expressions of plant material in water. The difference isn’t just aromatic, it’s structural, chemical, and functional. And once you understand that difference, their roles in skincare and aromatherapy become much clearer.

The Energetics of Essential Oils
Finding Balance Through Scent

Over the years, one of the things I’ve loved most about working with essential oils is discovering how deeply they can support our emotional and energetic states, not just through aroma, but through the energetics they carry. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), every herb, plant, and essence has a nature: warming or cooling, dispersing or anchoring, stimulating or calming. When you start to understand these “yin and yang” qualities, it becomes so much easier to choose oils that genuinely match what your body and mind are craving.

Claims of Purity
What It Really Means

The label “100% Pure & Natural” is often thrown around, often from big brand shelves and discount chain stores, but very few essential oils live up to it. And unless you know what to look for, it’s easy to be misled by impressive words and low prices.

Sustainability in Aromatherapy
Why It Matters

As lovers of essential oils, it’s easy to be captivated by their beauty - the delicate petals, rich resins, and ancient trees that give us their scent. But behind every drop lies the story of a plant, an ecosystem, and the people who harvest it. That’s why sustainability has always been at the heart of what we do at Ahimsa Oils.

Pet Safe Essential Oils
What You Should Know

A frequent question I get asked is: Are essential oils safe to use around pets?” If you’re like me, your pets are family. So it makes total sense to be cautious, especially when using products as concentrated and powerful as essential oils. The good news is that yes, with a little care and awareness, you can enjoy aromatherapy in a way that’s completely safe for your furry companions.

Black Pepper vs Pink Peppercorn
Not Just for the Kitchen

Every now and then, I like to shine a light on the lesser used essential oils, the ones that tend to sit quietly behind the lavenders, oranges and eucalyptus... but absolutely deserve their place on the shelf. Black Pepper and Pink Peppercorn are two of those oils. They might not be the first you reach for, but once you get to know them, they become the kind of oils you find yourself coming back to, especially in blends that need a little warmth, grounding, or clarity.

Let’s Break It Down

We often get asked about the difference between our 100% Pure & Natural essential oils and our Genuine range, especially since the price point between them is a little different. And it’s a great question, because while they might seem similar at first glance, there’s a bit more to it once you dig in.

Freshly Bottled, Not Mass Produced
Why We Bottle Every Oil To Order

One of the quiet things we’ve done since the very beginning, and still do today, is bottle all of our essential oils fresh to order. We keep only small quantities of bulk oil on hand, and pour each bottle just before it leaves our doors. It’s slower, yes. But it’s one of the most important ways we protect the quality and integrity of each oil.

Understanding Phototoxicity in Citrus Essential Oils

I am asked this question regarding citrus oils regularly so thought it would be great to shed some light on the topic. Phototoxicity refers to a reaction that occurs when certain substances are applied to the skin and cause irritation or burns upon exposure to sunlight. In the context of essential oils, this means that certain oils can cause adverse effects if they are used on the skin and then exposed to UV light.

Sense & Scent Understanding the Olfactory System

Our sense of smell is a remarkable and often under appreciated aspect of our sensory experience. The olfactory system is directly connected to the brain's limbic system, which plays a crucial role in our emotions and memory. This connection means that smells can evoke powerful memories and emotional responses. When we inhale a scent, odour molecules bind to receptors in the nose, which then send signals to the olfactory bulb in the brain. From there, the signals travel to areas involved in emotion, memory, and behaviour. This is why a familiar scent can instantly transport us back to a specific time and place or alter our mood. On a different note another fascinating process that involves several key mechanisms in the olfactory system is the phenomenon of no longer smelling a scent after a few minutes which is known as olfactory adaptation or olfactory fatigue. Olfactory adaptation is the process by which your sense of smell becomes less sensitive to a continuous or constant odour over time. Let's explore how it works!

Ginger Lily Essential Oil: A New Addition

Welcome to this edition of our newsletter where we explore a new addition just arrived, Ginger Lily essential oil (Hydicum Spicatum). Also known as Spiked Ginger Lily, Himalayan Ginger Lily, Butterfly Ginger and Kachur Sugandhi, this tropical plant has stunning white flowers which have a spicy and sweet fragrance. The essential oil itself is derived from its rhizomes which are the underground stems of the plant. This gives a very “earthy and rooty” aroma which means it won’t be loved by one and all however if you are a fan of Ginger Essential Oil and are fine with the earthiness of this then you will appreciate what this oil has to offer.

The Beautiful Essence of Jasmine Absolute

When it comes to luxurious and enchanting fragrances, jasmine stands out as a timeless favourite. Jasmine Absolute is renowned for its deep, intense aroma, often described as rich, sweet, and exotic. The process to harvest the flowers requires meticulous manual labour – it is estimated that it takes about 8,000 hand-picked blossoms just to produce 1 ml of Jasmine which equates to approximately 700 kg of jasmine flowers being needed to produce 1 kg of absolute. Another interesting factor is jasmine flowers are harvested between dusk and dawn due to this being when their scent and oil content is the highest.
